Rental Cars Define Our Lives

Rental cars define our lives.
That we are our most responsible
when we could be our least.

In rental cars we are citizen imitators.

He said he could abandon his parking ticket
because it’d take to much work to find him,
that cities don’t spend more than the amount they are trying to collect.

So he was a misdemeanor fugitive
and I was his get-away car.

(Over a California sunset,
whose beauty is a forgery,
placed there by thieves who slyly pull off their robbery
while everyone is looking
in this Western Museum of the Present Condition:)
he’s driven away.

The idea that Domestic is also Foreign.
That the things we control are few.

And in fabric backseats,
in the most basic of basics,
I’m rubbing that area between finger and fingernail
on the fabric cause it feels terrible
and terrible things are addictive.
