“Down in the District”

The moon was behind a veil,
like a window shade with the sun
hitting it at just the right angle
so it’s blinding.
And we’re coming up with names for things
and the only things that come to mind
are those things around us.
This repetitive, “I was about to say that”
is getting old as the signs
change from green to brown
and everything is a memorial.
Down in the District
a man resents his life
and takes pride in his own love
of his ability to hate others,
but something is coming through
as if you say, “Hey, I need a second chance here”
and it’s coming in the form of a photo.
In the days of “Do not hesitate”
no one does and it’s the only thing being followed.
It’s not that the moon is not full,
it’s just seems to be looking down
kindly and lovingly on another place.
