“Night Waves”

The fire you started
has been left untended,
night after night, after night,
after night, on a beach.
This roaring bon-fire,
that reflected on the night waves,
is an orange speck in the distance
as we walk away.
Someone is fanning the fire,
neither you nor I,
getting the last of it they can,
reheating coals and red woods,
heat illuminating but without flames.

The fire you started is burnt,
and the logs you once laid
are ash, like us.
